What happens in a Yoga Nidra Class?
A formal Yoga Nidra is 3- fold & has 7- stages.
Yoga Nidra is not an Asana Class (movement class) but a guided meditation lead by Amy.
The Yoga Nidra is a journey through the five Koshas. Kosha means "sheath" in Sanskrit. In yoga, the term is used to describe metaphorical layers within the human body. This meaning comes from the ancient Hindu texts called the Upanishads.
The five Koshas are Annamaya, Pranamaya, Manomaya, Vijanamaya and Anandamaya
The first 3 stages are as follows:
1. Yoga Nidra (Sleep) is a systematic method to release the body's muscular, emotional, and mental tensions. Yoga Nidra is a more effective form of psychic and physiological rest and relaxation than routine sleep.
2. Breath & Body - To balance the nervous system and calm the body.
3. Self Awareness Exercise - The recognition of habitual routines that may be contributing to your current health challenges.
The following seven stages are as follows:
1. Preparation. It is very important to be comfortable for the duration of the practice so some time is given to determine the best restful pose that suites your body. Some lay down completely while others prefer to recline half way or sit in a chair.
2. Sankalpa means a true desire that you want for your life therefore Amy will provide samples however each student is asked to determine a true desire for themselves. An example maybe "I will be successful in all that I undertake."
3. Rotation of Consciousness. Amy will take you through you whole body. Your practice is to remain awake and follow Amy's words in your mind & body. This is a practice of concentration.
4. Awareness of Breath. Amy will lead you in a breath exercise. Your practice is to follow the breath either by count, visualization or breath direction or feel. This promotes further relaxation.
5. Feelings and Sensations. Amy will lead you in the practice of opposites such hot/cold. The propose of opposites is to bring harmony to the brain and promotes the balance to patterns that are normally unconsciously completed during our fully awake time.
6. Visualization. Amy will lead you in a journey albeit through rushed streets or golden temples to promote self-awareness and to purge unwanted pain. In releasing unwanted pain the mind provides space for further concentration and meditation.
7. Practice Completion. Amy will ask you to return to your original Sankalpa and to further your deepest desires into the mind & body. Afterwards Amy will announce the completion of the Yoga Nidra.
